NASA's "garbage bin" satellite could help clean space

NASA released photos of its satellite "NanoRacks-Remove Debris" on Sep 20, 2018. The cube-shaped satellite was deployed on June 20, 2018 but has recently successfully deployed a net to capture a nanosatellite that simulates debris. How does it work? The cube demonstrates using a 3D camera to map the location and speed of debris and deploying a net to capture and de-orbit simulated debris up to 1m (3ft) in size. Analysis of video of the demonstration runs back on Earth then increases the understanding of debris that needs removal and how best to do so, according to NASA.Collisions in space could have serious consequences to the International Space Station as well as satellites, but research has shown that removing the largest debris could significantly reduce the chance of collisions.
