Seaweed removal work started on Miami Beach

Steve Leatherman, a professor of environmental studies at Florida International University, who's also known as "Dr. Beach", walks along the seaweed in search of Brazilian seeds he says often get carried ashore along with the seaweed, at Miami Beach, Florida, on Thursday, August 1, 2019. Tons of seaweed that was turning away tourists in Miami is being removed from the beaches by city authorities using heavy machinery. Scientists have warned that the deforestation of the Brazilian forest and the resulting discharge of fertilizer into the Amazon River caused the Atlantic seaweed bloom, which stretches from South America past the Caribbean and up the Mexican coast.
