Donated ambulances about to provide services in five impoverished provinces

September 5, 2017 marks the second National Charity Day in China. On the eve of the occasion, the China Siyuan Foundation for Poverty Alleviation and Bazaar Charity Fund jointly held a ceremony in Beijing to mark the donation of 210 ambulances to be spread out across the country. The 210 ambulances donated by the society will be distributed and provide services in hospitals located in five impoverished provinces and regions, including Shaanxi, Sichuan, Shanxi, Xinjiang and Jiangxi. The project is meant to help grant more medical access to rural areas.

The medical system in China has not traditionally been able to guarantee ambulance services across the vast rural areas. The CSFPA launched the Siyuan Ambulance Project in 2013. Around 2,300 ambulances have been donated by the group to more than 800 impoverished counties and regions identified by the Chinese government. The donated ambulances are able to provide services to roughly two million patients per year. Among them, 89% of the ambulances have been purchased through the group's Bazaar Star Charity Night, which has raised over 130 million yuan.

Addressing this year's Chairty Night, the President of China Siyuan Foundation for Poverty Alleviation, Chen Changzhi, warned that 7.34 million people are living at or below the poverty line due to health care issues.

Lan Jiang, President of a local community hospital located in the village of Xinqiao in Sichuan Province spoke on behalf of the rest of the hospitals that received ambulances from this project. He noted that some hospitals in his region do not have any ambulances. This means people in certian areas might have to wait for an ambulance which is some 50-kilometers away at a county-level hospital.
