Genetic tests help people predict their likely hood of being born with an inherited disease.
However, more and more Chinese parents are using genetic tests for their own ulterior motives, using the tests as a means to further understand their child’s potential. The parents then use this data to dictate the decisions they make for their children, ultimately making sure they do not waste time on activities where they do not have genetic advantages.
The alternative use for this test is drawing concern from the public. Netizens have argued that the interests of the child should outweigh genetic advantages. They also question whether it is fair that children should be pushed into something merely based on the results of a test. This has also dug up the age-old “nature versus nurture” debate.
Do you think this application of genetic tests is a wise choice for parents?
