An official of Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport said the capital plans to limit the total number of its shared bikes.
Zhou Zhengyu, director of the commission, said Beijing would soon introduce guidelines for bike-sharing industry, including requirements for parking, safety and management. Shared bike providers will be asked to set up digital fences to promote orderly parking.
Beijing currently has 13 start-ups that provide bike sharing services and over 1.6 million shared bikes in use.
There will also be cooperation with Internet firms, in building a smart transport management system, where all kinds of traffic data are collected and timely analyzed.
Meanwhile, an initiative to cut the numbers of shared bikes in downtown areas and moving more bikes to Shanghai's outskirts was launched yesterday.
The move came as a bike sharing service branch of Shanghai Bicycle Association was set up on the same day, the country's first self-disciplinary organization of bike sharing companies.
Draft regulations on bike sharing insurance services were also released.
Shanghai's bike sharing users' credit system is expected to be integrated into the city's general social credit system in 2018, which aims to encourage customers to use and park bikes appropriately.
