The aftermath of Singles' Day sale is staggering: totals surged to around $25 billion across Chinese e-commerce platforms, making up 40 percent of global online sales.
According to data from National Academy of Economic Strategy, China dominated world e-commerce in 2016, recording $750 billion in sales, more than the US ($312 billion), UK ($150 billion) and Japan ($90 billion) combined.
Chinese did not spend the most online per capita in 2016. That honor went to the UK at $3,456 per person, followed by France at $1,925.
What does e-commerce data say about shopping habits around the world?
In Germany, middle-aged and senior citizens are the main consumers on e-commerce sites, especially those ages 55 and older.
But very few in the country are using mobile payment platforms, at only 7 percent.
According to research organization eMarketer, South Korea takes the title for largest percentage of population shopping online at 72.2 percent.
