Parents are upset after a teacher at a Central China kindergarten asked them to reveal their degree of education in a school chat group.
Some called the request offensive and accused the school in Jiaozuo, Henan Province of behavior that would lead to favoritism.
The request set off complaints after parents with advanced degrees received compliments from members in the group while gossip circulated about those with less education.
The school, which was not named in reports, said the question aimed to help the teacher better reach students.
A school spokesperson said, "The idea was to understand the educational background at home so teachers could individualize their work."
However, a parent surnamed Wang said, "Won't this just turn into a game of 'my parents are better than yours?" Wang also expressed concerns this could lead to favoritism.
