Yajie: And wo shi Yajie. There are many different forms of working out and different pieces of equipment to use, so this will be a busy but a useful week.

Chris: Okay Yajie… let’s start by learning the Chinese term for “gym”.
Yajie: Gym in Chinese is 健身房 (jian4 shen1 fang2).
Chris: 健身房 (jian4 shen1 fang2).
Yajie: 健身 (jian4 shen1) means to work out, to build up your body shape.
Chris: 健身 (jian4 shen1 ). Then what does 房(fang2) mean?
Yajie: 房 (fang2) is an indoor place for doing activities.

Yajie: So gym is 健身房 (jian4 shen1 fang2).
Chris: I see, 健身房 (jian4 shen1 fang2). Well, sometimes I go to the gym for weightlifting. So I wonder what its Chinese word.
Yajie: It’s 举重(ju3zhong4),weightlifting.
Chris: 举重(ju3zhong4)
Yajie: 举(ju3), ju, the third tone. It means to lift.
Chris: 举(ju3)
Yajie: 重 (zhong4), the fourth tone, means the weight.

Yajie: Yes. They do it to keep fitness, to be slim….
Chris: Well, then I was wondering how do you say aerobics in Chinese?
Yajie: It’s 有氧运动(you3yang2 yun4dong4). 有氧(you2 yang3)literally means to “have oxygen”. As you can see that this sports “运动(yun4 dong4)” can produce more oxygen and air while doing it. 有氧运动(you3yang2 yun4dong4), aerobics.
