成语故事:此地无银三百两 No 300 Taels of Silver Are Buried Here

此地无银三百两

cǐ dì wú yín sān bǎi liǎng

No 300 taels of silver are buried here

此地cǐ dì means this place, and 无银wú yín means there is no silver. 三百两Sān bǎi liǎng is three hundred taels of silver. A guilty person usually would give himself away by conspicuously protesting his innocence. This idiom is used to mock someone who thinks he is clever and tries to cover things up, only to reveal what he wants to hide. It can be used to describe situations that are sarcastically self-explanatory.

Literal meaning:There are not 300 taels of silver buried here

Explanation: to try to conceal sth. but give oneself away by the act

E.g

你这是此地无银三百两,人们很快就会知道是你犯了错。

Nǐ zhè shì cǐ dì wú yín sān bǎi liǎng ,rén men hěn kuài jiù huì zhī dào shì nǐ fàn le cuò 。

You gave yourself away by concealing the truth; people will soon find out what mistake you have made.
