Story:
The Chinese idiom 半途而废( bàn tú ér fèi ) literally means give up before the job is done.It comes from about a story about a man called Yue Yangzi (乐羊子) during the Warring States Period (475-221BC).
中国成语“半途而废”是用来形容事情没有做完就停止。这个故事来自于战国时期一位名叫乐羊子的人。
Explanation:
途,是指道路;废,就是停止。半途而废是说走到一半就停下来,不再往前走,形容事情还没有做完就停下来。
“途” means the road, 道路;“废”means “stop”, stop during the halfway on the road is 半途而废 (bàn tú ér fèi ), literally means give up before the job is done, or someone abandans a job they are doing half way; wasted.
So we use it to describe a person who carries something but can’t through to the end, or leave it unfinished.
e.g
1. 我们决不能半途而废。
wǒ men jué bú néng bàn tú ér fèi.
We must under no circumstances give up halfway
2. 不管困难多大,他们也不会半途而废。
bú guǎn kùn nán duō dà ,tā men yě bú huì bàn tú ér fèi.
They wouldn't stop halfway however great the difficulties might Be.
