On the Way to China (IV): Alashankou, China
In 2011, the China-Europe rail freight service went into operation. Faster than a ship and cheaper than a plane, it ushered in a new era for rail freight. Seen as a "Belt and Road on rails," it gave a new energy to the efforts to revive the ancient Silk Road trading route.
The Alataw Pass, located in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is one of the busiest land ports on the modern Silk Road that connects Asia with Europe and is the home of the Alashankou Port. Trains from Europe pass through the port carry goods such as vehicles and raw industrial materials from countries including Italy, Britain, Germany, Poland, and Kazakhstan bound for customers across China.
