One in a Billion - Fashion Designer
As one of China’s first-generation fashion designers, Guo Pei is the first Asian designer with the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in France. She has witnessed China’s fashion industry grow from scratch. Guo Pei’s works show the aesthetic changes of China and the revival of the nation’s cultural confidence over the past thirty years.
Guo Pei began studying fashion in 1982. At the time, fashion design was a completely new concept for Chinese people. The fashion industry in China took off 30 years ago. Over the past 30 years, China’s aesthetics went from being conservative to inclusive, seemingly overnight.
Since the Beijing Olympics, there’s gradually been a revival of admiration for traditional culture. Guo said,“in 2009, I began advocating for traditional Chinese wedding gowns, but no one approved of the idea. Nowadays, Chinese women, when they get married, they think about having their own Chinese wedding gowns.”
