Passenger dies after heroic rescue effort in Beijing subway

A passenger who got caught in the gap between the train and the platform barrier on Beijing's subway line 2 has died of his injuries. 

The 46-year-old passenger surnamed Zhang tried to climb over the barrier on the subway platform as a train arrived at Dongzhimen Station on Thursday night. 

Other passengers joined subway staff in the rescue and pushed the train carriage to widen the gap in order to pull the man out. 

Zhang sustained head injuries and was taken to hospital immediately afterwards.
