Fan painting: an ancient tradition in China

For over 3,000 years, fans have been used to keep cool. One ancient tradition that is still practiced in China is fan painting. Fans are used as a decorative item, in dances and as an implement to keep cool during hot summers. Painting landscapes and figures on fans became an art form during the Song Dynasty.
