The Cuban town on Gitmo’s doorstep
Guantanamo Bay is home to a US naval base and one of the world's most infamous prisons. But for Cubans in the nearby town of Caimanera, it's just home.
On one side of the bay detainees are kept behind bars in the controversial detention centre that US President Donald Trump has pledged to keep open. Just a few miles away, Cuban children play in the water with US military installations in the background.
Nearly 120 years after the US permanently leased the land for the base from the Cuban government, many residents are now demanding its return. But there's no sign that Washington would be willing to give up its longstanding strategic foothold in the Caribbean.
