ALS patient challenges 1,600m mountain
Zhang Wei is a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal disease that kills the nerve cells that control walking, eating, and breathing.
The prognosis for his longevity with the disease was not good, and it was estimated that he wouldn't live to his 30th birthday. However, the 29-year-old man has challenged his disease by climbing Mount Tai and Mount Hua, two of the most renowned Five Great Mountains of China.
Zhang accomplished his two attempts with help from Meng Mian, a kind woman who voluntarily takes care of him. Zhang said his next goal is to visit the Great Wall.
