The giant stone Buddha at Leshan Mountain is located in China’s Sichuan province. It is the biggest bas-relief or cliff carving in the country.
Construction of the giant stone Buddha at Leshan Mountain was started in A.D. 713 and took 90 years to complete. After more than 1300 years of exposure to wind and rain, it still stands strong. 71 meters in height, the giant stone Buddha is as big as the mountain behind it. The Buddha’s head alone is 14.7 meters in height, from feet to knees it is 28 meters. The Buddha’s foot can accommodate 100 people, with a width of 8.5 meters.
In ancient times, Leshan Mountain was located at the confluence of 3 rivers, and flooding often took place. The giant Buddha was built to pacify the rivers.
