Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is the largest provincial-level administrative division in China in terms of land size. Covering an area of over 1.66 million km2, Xinjiang accounts for more than one sixth of China's total territory.

Xinjiang is situated on the route of the ancient silk road, and was an important staging post for connecting east-west commerce.

Xinjiang has diverse landscapes and is rich in natural resources. Forests cover the mountain ranges and plains, accounting for nearly a third of the forestry in the Northwest region. There are many different species of wildlife in Southern and Northern Xinjiang, totaling up to 500 in the whole of the autonomous region.

Xinjiang is home to a number of ethnic groups with 13 ethnicities residing there for generations.

Xinjiang is also called the “land of song and dance”, the “land of fruit”, and the “land of gold and jade”.
