China starts building of observatory to decode cosmic secrets

A foundation-laying ceremony for the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) was held in Daocheng, Sichuan Province on June 19 2018. Spanning 1.36 square kilometers and located at an average altitude of 4,410 meters, LHAASO will detect cosmic rays, analyze the sources of the rays, and help decode the origins of the universe, as well as monitor solar activity and the space environment around the Earth.
