Mushroom-shaped air bubbles appeared in the layers of ice on the frozen Songhua River in Jilin Province on Tuesday, January 22, 2019. The bubbles, which could be seen from the Caihong Bridge over the river, occur when air dissolved in the water turns back into gas when the water cools. If the bubbles are surrounded by ice when they are formed, they get trapped in the ice. [Photo: VCG]
