A rare collection of hand-colored slides showing some of the earliest images of animals at the London Zoo have emerged almost 150 years later. Among the fascinating pictures from 1870 are animals such as the quagga, an extinct type of zebra, of which only a handful of images exist. Other famous animals' pictures include Jumbo the elephant, which was later sold to 'Greatest Showman' P.T Barnham, and Obaysch the hippo which drew 10,000 visitors a day. The 48 'Magic Lantern' slides are expected to be sold by Penzance-based auctioneer house David Lay, with the slides estimated to sell for around £3,000. [Photo: VCG]
