In the Name of Justice: Teenage drunk driver blames "Affluenza" for deadly car crash
Ethan Couch was drunk when he got behind the wheel of his father's Ford pickup truck one night in 2013. Speeding down a country back road, the 16-year-old lost control and ploughed into a car on the side of the road, killing four people and wounding nine others. During his trial, a psychologist hired by his parents, Dick Miller, claimed that Couch was a victim of "Affluenza". The psychologist said Couch shouldn't be held accountable because he couldn't understand the potential consequences of his actions, because he was raised in a rich family and spoiled by his parents. Ethan Couch was sentenced to six months of rehabilitation in a treatment center, a probation period of ten years – and not one day in prison.
